Are you keen to get involved in setting up our very own Repair Café serving the Wairarapa? We are seeking volunteers with all kinds of expertise. Also we invite community involvement from youth, charities, businesses— everyone who wants to keep waste out of the landfill. We’re keen to support knowledge and skills sharing for independent communities.

Internship Term: 6–12 months | Time Commitment: 3–5 hrs/week (flexible, student-friendly)
Event Dates: Quarterly Repair Café Events — next event: 6 September 2025

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you passionate about the environment, community, or creative problem-solving?
Join the Wairarapa Repair Café movement as an Intern Coordinator and help bring our hands-on, waste-reducing events to life!

We’re seeking young people — from year 10-13 to university level — including non-students — to lead and support the coordination of our quarterly Repair Café events. This is an opportunity to grow your leadership, communications, and event planning skills, while contributing to real change in our community.

You'll work with a dynamic team to bring together skilled repairers, community groups, and local whānau to fix broken items, transfer knowledge, and inspire sustainable living.

Please Note: This is an unpaid volunteer internship. While the position is not financially compensated, interns will gain hands-on experience, mentorship, skill development, and public recognition as valued contributors to a growing community sustainability initiative. We are committed to supporting your learning journey and can provide references, certificates of participation, and endorsement for academic credit where applicable.

KEY TASKS

  • Events Planning & Coordination: Support all aspects of planning, setup, facilitation, and evaluation of Repair Café events

  • Stakeholder Outreach & Engagement: Help connect with schools, repairers, volunteers, and local organisations

  • Public Speaking & Presentation: Speak at events, hui, and workshops to inspire participation

  • Newsletter & Press: Draft event recaps, volunteer spotlights, and community stories

  • Social Media & Promotion: Assist with designing and scheduling posts across platforms

  • Community Engagement: Help create welcoming, inclusive spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds

  • Content Collection & Documentation: Take photos, gather feedback, and support impact storytelling

  • Youth Advisory Panel: Help establish and coordinate a Youth Advisory Panel to ensure rangatahi leadership is embedded in our governance and decision-making

 

WHAT YOU’LL GAIN

WHO SHOULD APPLY

We welcome applicants who are:

  • Aged approximately 16–24

  • College students, university students, or youth not currently studying

  • Curious about sustainability, repair, or community development

  • Good communicators with a willingness to learn

  • Able to commit to flexible weekly tasks and attend quarterly events

  • Based in or near Wairarapa
